When starting a whisky collection, what should you consider?

Aswell as being a flight to safety in these uncertain times. Experts from UKV International say, “rare whisky is a good long-term bet and prices are up 582% in the last decade. It’s liquid gold and we’re definitely observing a thirst for demand in Whisky for 2020 and beyond”

1. Age Statement

Knowing the age of your whisky is very important. Whisky’s tend to increase in price exponentially as they age.
The age statement of a Whisky depends on how long it’s been in wood for.
So you can have a whisky that’s 20 years old – so that means it’s been in the barrel for 20 long years.
If you take it out of the barrel, and it stays 10 years in the bottle, then that’s still a 20 year old whisky.
So the amount of flavour and colour that these bring on in the barrel, that’s all dependant on how long they stay in oak for.

2. Rarity

Secondly, well Whisky doesn’t increase in age in the bottle but it will most likely increase in rarity over time. Owning a rare bottle is very important when you are collecting
Either you can get a bottle that was produced in limited numbers where the number of bottles produced is displayed on the bottle itself. Or you can aqcuire a bottle that was incredibly popular in its day.

An example is the Bowmore black 1964,bottled in 1994 at 30 years of age. This was released at only 80gbp on the high street, scored very well with critics, and following a buying frenzy and being drunk only a few now remain.

It is hard to believe that in the 1990s you could buy a bottle of Black Bowmore for £70. With this latest sale we are now seeing bottles change hands for over 150 times that amount

3. Style

Next, is the style of the Whisky. Is it heavily sherried, is it american oak or perhaps its heavily peated or with fruity notes
While Scotland is the largest region that produces whisky, Japan is one of the most important world regions, aswell as american and irish whisky – all of which a reincredibly important to the collectors

4. Vintage statement

Also important is the vintage statement of a whisky bottle which denotes the year in which it was distilled, and the timeline of any distillery will change throughout the years
Some whiskys change hands. Everytime you change ownership, something slightly different will happen with either the production or the releases from that distellery.
And you get to hold just a little piece of history from that distillery in a glass or in a bottle.

5. Bottling

Next,we have to understand whos bottling the whisky.
So original bottlings of those that have been bottled by the distillery or distillery owner, where as those botttled by indepndant bottlers tend to be single barrels or single expressions from one distillery
often bottled at full strength.

6. Storage

Storing whisky is also very important for its longevity. Unlike wine, you want to store your Whisky standing up
Many Whiskys these days, especially single malts use stopper corks,
High alchohol whisky you don’t want touching that cork because eit will deteriate over time.
Should also be in a fairly cool place with no natural light. This is going to help reduce the evaporation

7. Design
